The Stevenson Expressway ramp onto northbound DuSable Lake Shore Drive was blocked Monday night after part of the facing of a retaining wall collapsed near McCormick Place, leaving debris strewn across the roadway. According to Chicago’s Office of Emergency Management and Communication, the northbound Stevenson Expressway ramp onto Lake Shore Drive is currently blocked due to a traffic obstruction, and motorists are being advised to seek alternate routes. According to the Metropolitan Pier and Exposition Authority, a section of the face brick on the retaining wall bordering McCormick Place buckled and fell on Monday evening. The debris fell onto the shoulder and into part of the right lane of the ramp from the Stevenson Expressway, officials said. There have been no reported injuries, and there was only minor vehicle damage, per officials. Additional face brick is being removed around the damaged area, officials said, and the ramp remains closed as of 11 p.m. The cause of the collapse is unknown at this time, and structural engineers are expected to assess the integrity of the retaining wall.
