I am not a Muslim but here is why I fast during Ramadan - Alice Morrison

The seven of us are sitting expectantly on low couches in an L shape with a circular table in the middle. A steaming bowl of soup, a bottle of water and communal cup and a plate of dates and a sweet, sticky pastry called shabakiyya are laid out in front of us. We haven’t eaten or drunk for 14 hours.
